Leo is a long-eared owl. His official name is Oberon, but his handler calls him by his nickname, Leo. His story began in the California Valley when as a baby, he fell from his nest. He was rescued and treated for his injuries by Pacific Wildlife Care, but unfortunately his wing fracture would prevent him from ever being able to fly properly.

The good news is Leo has a safe place to stay at PWC, and he was given the very important job of Wildlife Ambassador. This means he travels to different events to raise awareness about his species and the amazing things PWC does for orphaned animals! While going back into the wild is always the goal, this is a very good and safe alternative for sweet Leo.

Long-eared owls are uniquely adaptable and resilient, it is very rare for them to need rehabilitation because they can compensate for conditions by relying on their varied diet. The long-eared owl has feathers called ear tufts that reflect their mood, kind of like cats’ ears do. When their ear tufts are up, they act like a warning to other males and when they are down, look out! The ear tufts are not actually their ears—their ears are located lower down on the head.

Leo loves to perch way up high and look over the beautiful wilderness next to his house. This stunning owl has incredible golden eyes that were so enchanting that I knew I had to paint him.
