I fell in love with Lover boy right when I met him. (I had carrot treats with me so that probably helped.) He was gentle and sweet, and let me pet him for a long time. To be honest, I have always been a bit afraid of horses. I don’t know why, as I’ve met many friendly horses and even ridden some before. I’ve never had a bad experience, but for some reason I am always uneasy around them. Lover Boy was a different story, though. Something about him put me immediately at ease.
Lover Boy is a magnificently beautiful Belgian draft horse. In 1996, when he was just 3 months old, Redwings Horse Sanctuary rescued him from an auction in Canada where his fate would have been death if he wasn’t purchased. His mother was being used by a drug company that had no use for baby horses. After Redwings acquired him, he spent his first night alone. The next day he was joined by three rescued fillies from the same auction, and he was SO excited to see their familiar faces that he gave them all horse hugs! From then on, he was called Lover Boy for his sweet, loving disposition. They also call him “LB” for short.
Lover Boy now resides at the sanctuary in a large pasture that he shares with his best horse friend, Melissa. He has been living out his days at Redwings, happy and loved, since he was 3 months old.
