Molly was rescued by a veterinarian in Santa Ynez about 12 years ago. The vet knew that Alpacas always need to be with a companion, and unfortunately his other Alpaca had just passed away. He made the choice to call the Turtle & Tortoise Sanctuary of Arroyo Grande to see if they could help. They were happy to take Molly in and placed her in a habitat with Nellie the Emu, Oreo the Goat, and Sherman the Tank- a tortoise. Molly’s roommates were happy to have a new Alpaca to share their space with, as they had just lost their good friend, Al (a lovely Alpaca that I painted awhile back).
Every time I visit Molly, she is calm and curious, just staring at me with her toothy grin. This is a big change in her personality- when she was first rescued, she was kicking and spitting so much she picked up the name “Molly Mayhem!” It’s nice to see that she’s been able to calm down in her safe new surroundings. She’s still got a little mischief in her though, as one of her favorite hobbies is to spit on Nelly the Emu! On hot summer days she likes to be sprayed with the hose and makes sure whoever is spraying her gets both sides of her. I can’t wait to get back to the Turtle & Tortoise Sanctuary to visit this sweet and sassy gal again soon!
