William is a gopher snake. He came to Pacific Wildlife Care in 2016. At the time, he was about two years old and had been someone’s pet, but they had to move and couldn’t take him. Gopher snakes have a unique defensive mechanism in which they mimic a rattlesnake by curling up into a strike pose, enlarging their head into the appearance of a triangle like a rattlesnake, and vibrating their tails. While this behavior can keep them safe, it can also have the opposite effect and get them killed if people mistake them for a rattlesnake.
William is easygoing and very tolerant of being handled. He is a good ambassador for showing people that snakes are beneficial and not as scary as some think. Gopher snakes help keep the rodent population under control by eating mice, gophers, and other small rodents. I have always been fearful of snakes, but I did pet William, and I even think he’s pretty cute now that I have met him a few times.
