Ranger is a young Great Horned Owl. He arrived at Pacific Wildlife Care in 2023 after falling from his nest. He showed clinical signs that indicated possible rodenticide poisoning, which means his parents likely fed him a poisoned rodent. With treatment, he recovered but has some mild neurological issues that would prevent him from being successful if released. Now, he serves as an ambassador animal for PWC, demonstrating the negative impacts of rodenticides on birds of prey. Ranger’s handler, Kathy, says that he is inquisitive and fun to work with. When I went into his enclosure to meet him, he got very puffed up and was suspicious of me, but he eventually calmed down and became curious. I got a photo of his head tilted adorably while he was giving me the once-over, and I had to paint that image!

Great horned owls are widely distributed throughout North America and live in a variety of habitats. They are a large owl species that is usually inconspicuous during the day while roosting. They prey on a variety of rodents, mammals, and birds. Small rodents make up a large part of their diet, which makes these owls very beneficial for rodent control. They are easily recognizable by their large size, ear tufts, and hooting vocalizations.
