Corax is a Common Raven. Although it was initially believed that Corax would be releasable, it was discovered, as the time approached to release him with a group of other ravens, that he wasn’t able to fly to the high perches in the aviary. Later, it was found that he has a bone defect that affects his flight. While he can fly, he can’t do so well enough to survive in the wild, so he is now an ambassador animal for Pacific Wildlife Care. He lives in a large enclosure on the property of Claudia, his handler. Corax enjoys figuring out his puzzle toys and is quite intelligent. He used to talk a lot, imitating the little dog next door and learning to say things like “Hi, Corax,” “Hola,” and “Shalom.” One day, while Claudia was picking up the many feathers that litter his enclosure when he is molting, she looked behind her and saw that he was following her, also picking up feathers. Ravens provide endless entertainment to those who take the time to observe them. Ravens are scavengers and help clean up the environment, much like vultures do. They will also go after weak and/or sick animals as prey.

Corax does not like other people coming into his enclosure. He flies back and forth, clearly showing that he is upset, as I observed when I went in to meet him. Oddly, his trainer (who taught Claudia how to properly handle him) has a little boy who has been visiting Corax since he was about three years old. Despite the fact that Ethan jumps around, squeals, and is generally very active and noisy, Corax is completely accepting of his presence and seems to enjoy Ethan’s visits. I wish he enjoyed my visit that much!
