Jimbob at Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Jimbob

He is a popular donkey on the Isle of Wight. He has a lot of admirers and is even called the  “George Clooney” of donkeys because he’s so handsome. He arrived at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary from Carisbrooke Castle in 2017 after his retirement from turning the castle’s giant oak water wheel. The water wheel takes a bucket down a well to the water and draws it back up. Since 1969, the wheel has been turned by a team of donkeys. They perform about 30 seconds of work at each demonstration. Don’t worry, they spend the rest of the day getting spoiled and pampered by the staff on five acres of pasture. I even learned Jimbob sometimes fell asleep on the wheel when it was his turn! He is also said to be the best cuddler and always notices when someone is having a bad day.  I found him to be very charming and used to getting a lot of attention. He certainly caught my attention. Elvis at Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Elvis

I think Elvis is the most handsome donkey at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary. He is so fluffy with his long gray and white coat. He has a large personality and is a pretty vocal donkey, so he was easy to track down when I was wanting to take photos of him, which I did a lot. He does outreach work with the elderly and children on the Isle of Wight.  Elvis loves to hang out with his friend Barnaby, and he really dislikes when the veterinarian tries to do dental work on him! Snowy at Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Snowy

Snowy was a lovely gentle white donkey who was super enchanting. Completely white donkeys are rare which makes Snowy even more special.  He would tend to eat a bit more slowly than the other donkeys at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, so he got to eat in his own stall so Jimbob wouldn't try to finish his food. I loved walking by the barn and seeing him poke his head out to politely let us know he was done and ready to go back to his friends when we had a minute to open the door for him. Sadly, Snowy passed away in late November 2019 but he did enjoy love and attention from the public, volunteers, and workers at the sanctuary. He had amazing veterinary care making him comfortable in the last years of his life. He will be missed.

Thomas at Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Thomas

I met Thomas right after lunch on my second day at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary.  He can be a bit shy, but that day he was super brave and followed me out to the yard. When I turned around to see who was following me, he kept sticking his tongue out!  It was pretty funny! I kept laughing and he kept doing it. I recently learned that he does this quite often after eating or drinking. This whole time I thought it was just a fun game between the two of us.
